Trial begins for woman accused of fraud

The trial of Maryam Mammadova, accused of fraud under the pretext of selling West Gold butter, has begun in Baku.

According to Oxu.Az, the victim, Ilaha Salimova, was questioned at a hearing at the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, chaired by Judge Namig Kerimov.

She said she had lived in Moscow since 1995. In 2020, she returned to Azerbaijan and sold her apartment in the Khalglar Dostlugu district to start her own business. During this time, she met the defendant, who claimed to be selling West Gold butter. According to her, the product could be purchased for 6 manat per kilogram and sold in stores for 19 manat, which supposedly brought in a high profit.

Over two months, the victim invested 76,300 manat in the project. She later suspected fraud and demanded documents. Mamedova sent them via WhatsApp, but after checking, the victim’s sister claimed she was a fraudster. Ilaha Salimova emphasized that she was not demanding the defendant’s arrest, but merely wanted her money back.

The defendant admitted receiving the money from the victim at her home.

The next court hearing is scheduled for April 15.

Maryam Mamedova is charged under Article 178.3.2 (large-scale fraud) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
