The Goygol District Court has completed the investigation into the criminal case of Zamig Babayev (name and surname conditional), accused of abuse of office and official forgery. As reported by Oxu.Az, the verdict was announced at a hearing chaired by Judge Rashad Mustafayev.

The court sentenced the accused to 2 years and 3 months of restriction of freedom (electronic bracelet).

According to the indictment, Z. Babayev was a member and chairman of the municipality of the village of Molladzhalilli in the Goygol district from December 23, 2019 to June 6, 2024. During the investigation, based on documents received from the Ministry of Justice, it was established that the activities of local government bodies were not organized in the administrative territory of the said municipality, the accused chairman of the municipality did not fulfill his official duties, abused his official position and, going beyond the scope of his official powers, prepared decisions on behalf of the Mollajalilli municipality, which is a collegial body. He also single-handedly made decisions on the allocation of land plots from municipal property. As a result of his illegal actions, damage was caused to public interests and the reputation of the local government.

Punishment for theft to be toughened in Azerbaijan

The punishment for theft, that is, the secret theft of someone else’s property, will be toughened. The term of imprisonment for this act will be increased from two to three years. As APA reports, this is reflected in the proposed amendment to the Criminal Code, which was discussed at today’s meeting of the Milli Majlis.

According to the bill, theft, that is, the secret theft of someone else’s property, is punishable by community service for a period of 360 to 480 hours, or correctional labor for up to 2 years, or restriction of freedom for up to 2 years, or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

After discussions, the bill was put to a vote and adopted in the third reading.

An Azerbaijani citizen, Ramil Ramiz oglu Mamedov, who was on the international wanted list, has been extradited from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Report informs citing the Ministry of Justice.

Mamedov was wanted on charges of robbery committed by prior agreement with a number of persons (Article 181.3.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan) and embezzlement of funds in the amount of 120 thousand manats.

Ramil Mamedov was brought from Sarajevo to Azerbaijan by employees of the Main Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry and the Penitentiary Service and placed in the appropriate pre-trial detention facility based on a court decision on arrest.
