IT Expert’s sentence reduced

The sentence of Ilgar Aliyev, a well-known Azerbaijani information and communications technology expert convicted of drug trafficking, has been reduced, Oxu.az reports. The Supreme Court partially upheld his appeal, reducing his prison term from four to three years.

Given that his sentence begins in December 2023, Aliyev has 10 months remaining in prison. Moreover, since two-thirds of the amended sentence has already been served, he is eligible for parole if he complies with legal requirements.

It should be noted that Ilgar Aliyev previously headed the IT Department at Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC and also served as an advisor in the banking sector.

66 kg of drugs seized from illegal trafficking

As a result of operational activities carried out by officers of the Garadagh District Police Department, 43-year-old Akber Aliyev, suspected of drug trafficking, was detained, Oxu.Az reports, citing the press service of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Internal Affairs. He was found in possession of 21.3 kg of marijuana, 496 grams of opium, and 50 methadone tablets.

In a subsequent operation, 39-year-old Baku resident Elkhan Bandaliyev was detained. 23 kg 975 grams of marijuana were seized from him.

During the final operation in the village of Lokbatan, 32-year-old Yunis Mammadov, his peer Nazir Taghiyev, and 34-year-old Urfan Mammadli were detained. They are suspected of organizing the illegal sale of drugs in Baku. 20 kg 250 grams of marijuana intended for distribution throughout the city were seized from the detainees.

The total amount of drugs seized during the latest operations exceeded 66 kg. Criminal cases have been opened on all counts, and investigations are ongoing.

Since the beginning of the year, officers from the Garadagh District Police Department have seized approximately 80 kg of narcotics.
