Fake correspondent sentenced for extortion

The Baku Court of Grave Crimes has completed the trial of Khayyam Gurbanli, who is accused of blackmail and extortion. As reported by APA, the verdict was announced at a hearing chaired by Judge Eldar Ismayilov. The court sentenced Khayyam Gurbanli to 5 years and 6 months in prison in a general regime colony.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Khayyam Gurbanli, who claimed to be a correspondent for a newspaper, was detained based on numerous complaints received by the department from citizens. He was accused of threatening to disseminate negative information about a number of individuals and companies, as well as illegally demanding various amounts of money for deleting disseminated information.

Kh. Gurbanli was charged under Article 182.2.2 (extortion committed repeatedly) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
