More than 63 kg of marijuana seized from watermelons at the Astara customs office

As a result of the activities carried out by the employees of the Astara Customs Department of the State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan, an attempt to smuggle a large batch of drugs across the customs border, hidden in an unusual way – inside watermelons, was prevented.

As reported by Oxu.Az with reference to the SCC, the Astara Customs Department inspected a vehicle carrying a cargo of “fresh watermelons” from Iran to Russia in transit through the territory of our country. When checked on a stationary X-ray machine, the cargo aroused suspicion.

During a thorough inspection, a service dog of the Canine Service responded to 42 boxes. In 84 watermelons from these boxes, in foil-wrapped packages, drugs hidden from customs control were found – dried marijuana weighing a total of 63 kg 417 g together with the packaging.

An investigation is underway into this incident.
