Convicted of fraud

In Azerbaijan, a fraudster swindled 150 thousand manats from a military unit commander, Oxu.Az reports. Thus, Lieutenant Colonel Altay Alekberov became a victim of fraud by a person who promised to stop the criminal case against him.

According to the case materials, the Investigative Department of the Military Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case on the fact of selling scrap metal, which is on the balance sheet of the Ministry of Defense, at a price below the market price. The commander of the military unit Altay Alekberov was involved in the investigation. He was given an official order to compensate for the damage caused to the state budget. In this regard, the commander began to look for alternative ways to solve the problem and through acquaintances contacted Nurali Mammadov. Nurali said that with the help of his high-ranking “acquaintances” he would be able to achieve the closure of the case. However, to do this, it was necessary to bribe these “acquaintances”. Alekberov believed this promise and, having taken out loans from banks, gave Nurali 150 thousand manats. Despite the long wait, the commander’s problem was not resolved. After the commander’s protest, Nurali Mammadov returned 110 thousand manats to him. Altay Alekberov used this money to compensate the state for damages, after which his case was dismissed. Then the commander tried to return the remaining 40 thousand manats from Nurali and contacted law enforcement agencies for this purpose.

Based on the complaint, a criminal case was initiated against Nurali Mammadov under Article 178.3.2 (fraud causing major damage) of the Criminal Code. During the investigation, a preventive measure not related to arrest was applied to him. The accused never returned 40 thousand manats out of 150 thousand received from the commander. His guilt was proven during the trial.

By the decision of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, Nurali Mammadov was sentenced to 5 years in prison and arrested in the courtroom
