Last year, the damage from cyber fraud in Azerbaijan exceeded 22 million manats

In modern conditions, ensuring the cyber sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan occupies a special place among the country’s priority tasks. Reliable protection of critical infrastructure facilities, protection of the rights and legitimate interests of citizens are inextricably linked with ensuring cyber security. As reported by Oxu.Az, MP Nizami Safarov stated this at today’s plenary session of the Milli Majlis.

He noted that according to the order of the head of state dated March 19, 2025, among the main goals of the approved “Strategy for Artificial Intelligence of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025-2028”, a special place is occupied by strengthening the level of reliability of digital tools for ensuring national security, including information security, preventing information manipulation and disinformation attacks, as well as protecting artificial intelligence systems.

“Recently, the dissemination of fake video messages on behalf of government and public figures using artificial intelligence, the dissemination of false information on social networks by abusing the trust of banks, and the receipt of large sums from citizens’ bank cards through cyber fraud require urgent and immediate measures.

According to official data, in 2024, as a result of cyber fraud, citizens suffered material damage in the amount of more than 22 million manats, and in the first four months of 2025, the damage amounted to more than 6 million manats. The relevant government agencies are taking all necessary measures to combat cybercrime, but an important aspect of the problem is the improvement of existing legislation and the adoption of preventive measures in accordance with the trends of crime transformation in the coming years,” the parliamentarian emphasized.
