Armed group cultivating drugs in mountains arrested

Six people suspected of cultivating drugs, illegally storing firearms and ammunition, and committing other serious crimes were detained in Balakan district during joint operations of police and border guards, Oxu.Az reports with reference to the Sheki regional group of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Three drug plantations were discovered as a result of operational and investigative activities carried out in hard-to-reach highland areas with difficult terrain. The persons involved in sowing hemp were identified and detained: previously convicted 54-year-old Takhir Ismayilov, his 49-year-old relative Oktay Gyulyuyev and their 59-year-old acquaintance Nizami Garayev.

During the inspection of the territory, plants containing narcotic substances, two illegally stored hunting rifles and other material evidence were found. The suspects stated that they grew and tended hemp bushes for profit.

During other activities, three more people were detained for organizing drug trafficking and committing other crimes – Oruj Orujov, Elvin Papayev and Nasir Yetimov.

As a result of the operation conducted by the department’s employees on the fact of illegal storage of firearms and ammunition, 2 Kalashnikov assault rifles and 4 hunting rifles hidden in the mountainous area were found.

Operational search and operational investigative activities are ongoing.
