The investigation is being conducted by the Main Anti-Corruption Department under the Prosecutor General. Khanaliev is charged under Article 179.3.2 (embezzlement causing damage on a large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The main goal of the investigative bodies in cases of embezzlement is to compensate for the damage caused. In connection with this case, 40 thousand manats out of 70 thousand in damages have already been compensated during the preliminary investigation.
The 64-year-old former chairman is not currently in custody. A preventive measure in the form of police supervision before the trial has been chosen for him. The sanction of the brought charge provides for imprisonment for up to 10 years. However, full compensation for damages is considered a mitigating circumstance.
