Trial of Iranian drug smugglers who brought drugs into Azerbaijan

The Investigative Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan has completed a preliminary investigation into the discovery and seizure of narcotics smuggled into the country through the Caspian Sea during operational search operations conducted by officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Border Service in February of this year, Oxu.Az reports, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office press service.

The investigation established that citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran Eidmuhammed Kyalte, Haji Abdulnasir Muradi, Sharif Farju, Farzad Kyar, Ghaffar Gizil, Behzad Garanejad, and others, acting as part of an organized group, crossed the protected state border of the Republic of Azerbaijan outside of checkpoints on the night of February 2-3 of this year.

One group approached the southeastern part of the Shah Deniz oil field, while the other approached the coastal area of ​​Sumgayit. As a result of the special operation, the suspects were detained, and a particularly large quantity of narcotics—11 kg 25 g of dried marijuana, 1 kg 370 g of heroin, and 4,400 methadone tablets—were seized from the boats they were operating.

Based on the collected evidence, G. Gizil, B. Garanejad, E. Kyalta, G.A. Muradi, Sh. Farj and F. Kyar were charged under Articles 206.4 (smuggling committed by an organized group), 234.4.1 (illegal manufacture, production, acquisition, storage, transportation, transfer or sale of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances or their precursors by a group of persons by prior conspiracy or by an organized group) and 318.2 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Republic of Azerbaijan committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy or by an organized group, or with the use of violence or the threat of its use) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The case was sent to the Sumgayit Court of Grave Crimes for consideration.
