A former Defense Ministry officer accused of embezzling 6 million manats sentenced

The trial of Namig Mirzoyev, the former head of the Defense Ministry’s financial service, initiated by the State Security Service (SSS), has concluded, Oxu.Az reports. The Baku Military Court sentenced Mirzoyev to 11 years and 6 months in a maximum-security penal colony.
The verdict also includes details regarding the damage caused to the Defense Ministry and its compensation. It is noted that of the 6 million manats in damages, Namig Mirzoyev only reimbursed 343,810 manats, which is less than 5.7% of the total.
The SSS investigation established that in 2023-2024, Namig Mirzoyev embezzled particularly large sums of state funds from the Defense Ministry. He was charged under Article 179.4 (embezzlement or misappropriation on an especially large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Mirzoyev previously testified in a trial involving large-scale embezzlement at the Ministry of Defense, which involved the former head of the Finance and Budget Department, Major General Nizami Mammadov, and other high-ranking officials.
