A group of officials who created a channel for smuggling medicines and tobacco from Iran to Azerbaijan has been exposed, Oxu.Az reports, citing a joint statement from the Prosecutor General’s Office and the State Customs Committee.
It is noted that the investigation has established reasonable suspicions against Vusal Huseynov, an inspector with the 1st Department of the Bilasuvar Customs Department of the State Customs Committee, and Asif Gadzhimuradov, a dog trainer with the Azerterminalcomplex Association. They, in collusion with Etibar Khatamli and Iranian citizen Jafar Rezeyan, used their official positions to ensure the movement of unregistered medications, including those containing potent and psychotropic substances, as well as tobacco products without excise stamps from Iran, worth a total of 400,000 manats, outside customs control and to the appropriate individuals in Azerbaijan.
Based on the collected primary evidence, Vusal Huseynov, Asif Gadzhimuradov, Jafar Rezeyan and Etibar Hatamli were charged under Articles 200-1.2.2, 200-1.2.3 (illegal trafficking of medicines in large quantities by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), 206.3.2 (smuggling in large quantities by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), 213-1.2.1, 213-1.2.3 (import of goods subject to marking with an excise stamp, without such a stamp by a group of persons by prior conspiracy in large quantities), 234.4.1, 234.4.3 (illegal trafficking of psychotropic substances in large quantities by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), 240.3.2 (illegal trafficking of potent substances in large quantities for the purpose of sale) and 308.2 (abuse of office resulting in grave consequences) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
At the request of the investigative body and the submission of the prosecutor in charge of the preliminary investigation, the court ordered the pretrial detention of Vusal Huseynov, Asif Gadzhimuradov, and Etibar Khatamli, and the investigative body ordered a non-arrestive measure of restraint for Jafar Rezeyan.
Investigative and operational-search activities are currently ongoing in the case.
