Businessman arrested with drugs at Baku airport sentenced

A businessman attempting to fly from Baku to Istanbul was arrested with drugs at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Oxu.Az reports. The court heard the criminal case against Aliyusif Khalilov (born 1983), a native of Sumgayit, charged under Articles 206.2 and 234.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

According to reports, Khalilov was traveling to Turkey, where a branch of the company for which he is the legal representative is located.

The businessman, a methamphetamine user, attempted to smuggle the drug into Turkey on a Baku-Istanbul flight. He wrapped 1,408 grams of the hallucinogen in plastic wrap and placed it in an eyeglass case in his shoulder bag. The defendant wrapped another 0.357 grams in a cash register receipt and placed it in the pocket of a light-brown jacket he was wearing.

Aliusif Khalilov, who was detained by officers of the Main Customs Administration for Air Transport of the State Customs Committee, expressed regret in court and requested a suspended sentence. However, the court sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment and disqualified him from holding leadership or responsible positions in state, municipal, or private organizations for two years.
