A $90 million drug smuggling operation prevented in Azerbaijan

As a result of comprehensive operational, investigative, and control measures conducted by officers of the Astara Customs Department, a particularly large quantity of heroin intended for transportation to Europe was discovered and seized from illicit circulation, Oxu.Az reports, citing the State Customs Committee.

A railcar carrying tile adhesive from the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Estonia, transiting through the Republic of Azerbaijan, was detained at the Astara railway customs post and inspected using stationary X-ray equipment. Due to suspicious lines observed during the inspection, the cargo was subjected to a thorough customs inspection using a canine service dog.

During a search conducted following a sniffer dog test, 44 of the 3,250 bags were found to contain particularly large quantities of heroin, weighing a total of 456 kg 800 g (including packaging).

The estimated street value of the discovered drug on the European black market exceeds $90 million.

An investigation is underway.
