A man has been convicted in Baku of defrauding citizens by promising to sell phones confiscated by the State Customs Committee (SCC) at a low price at auction, Oxu.Az reports.
According to the indictment, Elmeddin Mamedov’s friend (names have been changed), Intigam Veliyev, told him that he and his partners, Shamil and Shahmurad, had imported phones from abroad, but the goods were confiscated by the SCC. Elmeddin assured him that his high-ranking contacts in the committee could assist in this matter.
However, a special operation was conducted at customs and eight employees were detained. After this, it became clear that the phones could not be retrieved. The accused claims to have received 60,000 manat from the victims and has already returned 47,000 manat to them.
By a decision of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes, he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
