The trial of Akif Bagirov, accused of treason and investigated by the State Security Service (SSS), has concluded, Oxu.Az reports. At the final hearing in the Baku Grave Crimes Court, presided over by Judge Mahira Kerimova, the verdict was read, sentencing Akif Bagirov to 16 years and 6 months in prison.
A. Bagirov was accused of attempting to commit a large-scale bribe on behalf of a foreign intelligence service in order to secure the release of Mahir Zeynalov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of the late academician Ziya Bunyadov.
Akif Bagirov transferred the funds to another Azerbaijani citizen charged, and these funds were discovered and seized as evidence during the investigation into the criminal case initiated by the SSS.
He is charged under Articles 29, 312.2 (attempted bribery) and 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
