The trial has concluded in the criminal case against Gabil Taghiyev, editor-in-chief of the website deryaz.az and founder of the newspaper Dəryaz. He is accused of extorting money from the heads of more than 20 different government agencies through threats and pressure.
According to Oxu.Az, the verdict was announced during a hearing chaired by Judge Kamil Aliyev of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes. The defendant was sentenced to five years and six months in prison.
Gabil Taghiyev was detained by officers of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in September 2024 based on citizen complaints. A criminal case was opened against him under the extortion article of the Criminal Code.
