Journalist Jamil Mammadli was sentenced, oxu.az reports with reference to Report. In the Sumgait Serious Crimes Court, at a meeting chaired by Judge Fakhmin Humbatov, a judgement was read out, according to which J. Mammadli was sentenced to 6 years and 2 months in prison. The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the accused to 8 years and 3 months in prison.

It is noted that Jamil Mammadli was prosecuted in January last year. He was charged under articles 178.2.4 (fraud causing significant damage), 182.2.1 (extortion committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy), 182.2.2 (extortion committed repeatedly) and 221.2.2 (hooliganism associated with resistance to a government official or other person performing duties to protect public order or suppress a violation of public order) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Employees of the internal affairs bodies of Azerbaijan ensured the detection of 59 crimes registered in the country on April 16, as well as 8 unsolved crimes related to previous periods, Trend reports, citing information disseminated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan.

It is noted that a total of 98 people who were wanted were detained (including 79 people as debtors). 37 facts related to drugs and 15 facts related to the discovery and seizure of illegally stored ammunition were revealed.

The State Social Protection Fund urged citizens not to trust intermediaries in submitting applications for targeted social assistance, oxu.az reports with reference to the Fund. It is reported that there are cases when citizens’ funds are appropriated by persons who promised them assistance in receiving targeted social assistance.

The department recalled that the entire procedure from application to assignment of social assistance occurs in electronic format without the possibility of outside intervention. Appeals are also processed through the electronic system. The decision to assign or refuse assistance is made electronically, and citizens receive a corresponding SMS notification.

Recently, cases have become more frequent when fraudsters obtain personal data of citizens’ bank cards by making calls from fake foreign phone numbers, oxu.az reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan.

It is noted that in order to combat such crimes, police officers installed information signs near public catering facilities and ATMs in the city of Sumgait in order to cyber-educate citizens, especially people who have reached retirement age. They contain detailed information about the most common methods used by cyber fraudsters.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs calls on citizens to be more vigilant and report such cases to the police.
