Right decision of the President

On June 4, 2013 the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a law on the amendments to the Criminal Code, which extend criminal penalties for the article 147 (libel) and article 148 (insult) which are touched information distributed by the Internet.

For the libel on Internet, the sanctions are fine of from 100 to 500 manat, or community service up to 240 hours. Defamation of serious crimes is punishable by 2 years of correctional labor or up to 3 years of imprisonment.

For the insult, the sanctions are fine of 300 to 1,000 manats, or public works – up to 240 hours, or correctional labor for up to one year, or by imprisonment for up to 6 months.
