Supreme Court rejects NIDA members’ appeal

On 15 October 2015 the Supreme Court on Thursday held a hearing on the cassation appeal over the verdict issued against a group of members of NIDA Civil Movement – Ilkin Rustamzade, Rashadet Akhundov, and Mammad Azizov, APA reports with reference to a lawyer  F. Namazly.

APA notes that the Baku Court on Grave Crimes sentenced Zaur Gurbanli, Ilkin Rustamzadeh and Rashadat Akhundov to 8 years in prison, Rashad Hasanov to 7 years and 6 months, Bakhtiyar Guliyev to 7 years, Mammad Azizov to 7 years and 6 months, Uzeyir Mammadli to 7 years, and Shahin Novruzlu to 6 years.

An appeal was filed over the verdict but was denied by the court.

The cassation appeals of Shahin Novruzlu, Uzeyir Mammadli, and Rashad Hasanov were considered in June and they too were denied. No cassation appeals had been filed by Ilkin Rustamzade, Zaur Gurbanli, Rashadet Akhundov, and Mammad Azizov at the time.

Bakhtiyar Guliyev, Shahin Novruzlu, Uzeyir Mammadli, and Zaur Gurbanli were later released following a pardon order signed by President Ilham Aliyev.
