IS terrorist organization members detained in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of National Security conducted an antiterrorist operation, detaining five persons involved in illegal armed groups, the ministry’s public relations department told APA.

As a result of the operation, citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan – Guliyev Namig Shahid oghlu, Hajiverdiyev Khalid Aliagha oghlu, Ahmadov Tahir Mahir oghlu, Asgarov Elvin Asgar oghlu and Mahmudov Anar Karam oghlu – were detained as suspects over the creation of armed formations or groups, which are not provided by the legislation of the Azerbaijan, and also participation in their creation and activity, supplying them by weapon, ammunition, explosives, military engineering or military equipment, involvement people in terrorism (commitment of explosion, arson or other actions creating danger to destruction of people, causing harm to their health, significant property damage or approaches other socially dangerous consequences committed with a view of infringement of public safety, intimidation of population or rendering of influence to acceptance of decisions by the state authorities or international organizations), involvement of Azerbaijani citizens or stateless persons residing in Azerbaijan into the armed conflicts outside the territory of Azerbaijan in order to disseminate religious teachings, under the guise of performing religious rites, or on the grounds of religious hatred, or undergoing military trainings for this purpose, or creation of a sustainable group acting for this purpose and committing other illegal actions.

The ministry’s Main Investigation Department has launched criminal cases under articles 12.1,279.1, 12.3,28,214.2.1, 12.3,28,214.2.3,12.1,218.2 and 283-1.3.The detainees were sentenced to the pre-trial detention.

The investigation revealed that in 2012-2015 they participated in illegal armed groups on the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of Iraq, as well as in the activities of the terrorist organizations Islamic State (ISIS), Jabhat al-Nusra and Jund al-Sham.

Investigative operational measures will be continued to thoroughly probe the criminal cases and detain other participants of these illegal actions.
