The Baku Court on Grave Crimes on 6 September 2016 completed examination of the criminal case of Rufan Aghjabeyov and Marfin Vladimir, who are both accused of fighting in the ranks of terrorists in Syria.

Under the court verdict R. Aghjabeyov was sentenced to 13 and V. Marfin to 14 years and six months imprisonment.

The two had been detained in an operation conducted by the liquidated Ministry of National Security. They were accused of fighting in the ranks of ISIL, Nusra Front, Jund al-Sham, and other terrorist organizations in the years 2013 to 2015.

Rufan’s brother, Urfan Aghjabeyov, was killed in Syria. Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies had issued international arrest warrant for him. Both brothers are veterans of the Karabakh War.

They are accused under articles 12.1, 279.1 and 283-1.3 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic.

On 6 September 2016 writer Akram Aylisli and his lawyer Elchin Sadigov were summoned to the Baku City Prosecutor’s Office.

 According to APA, the investigation materials were submitted them, and a protocol was drawn up in this regard. They were told that they will be summoned to the prosecutor’s office next week for conducting of investigative actions.   

Akram Aylisli was detained at Heydar Aliyev International Airport on March 30 2016. He was released on recognizance not to leave the country.

The writer is charged with hooliganism and use of violence against a representative of authority.

On 6 September 2016 Baku’s Nasimi district court rejected the petition on commuting REAL Movement executive secretary Natig Jafarli’s pretrial detention to house arrest, attorney Javad Javadli told APA.

On 12 August 2016, Jafarli was called to the Investigation Department for Grave Crimes of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Then he was taken to Nasimi district court which sentenced him to four months’ pretrial detention.

Natig Jafarli is charged under Articles 192 (illegal business) and 308 (abusing official powers).
